UNDERSTAND THE LABEL

Full synthetic.
Blend.
What matters for your car?

Choosing an oil starts with the vehicle’s requirements. Brand preference comes after compatibility.

These are different product descriptions

Synthetic blend combines synthetic and conventional base oils. Full synthetic is a distinct oil product category. Neither phrase, by itself, tells you that an oil satisfies every requirement for your particular engine.

Look beyond the viscosity

A designation such as 0W-20 describes a viscosity grade. Also check the performance category and any manufacturer-specific approval required in your manual. Two oils with the same viscosity can have different approvals.

The American Petroleum Institute explains oil service categories and certification marks. Your owner’s manual remains the starting point for which specifications apply to your vehicle.

What to ask at the service desk

Ask which exact oil product and viscosity the shop intends to use and whether it meets the manufacturer’s required specification. If you requested full synthetic, ask for that to be shown on the work order and receipt.

Avoid universal promises

Do not assume every full synthetic oil can be used in every engine, or that choosing it automatically authorizes a longer change interval. The correct oil and the correct maintenance schedule are separate decisions.
